whangārei māori land court
GHD DESIGN
The court is one of nine regional courts spread across New Zealand. The designers, GHD Woodhead Creative Spaces, sought to create a contemporary space that did more than just reflect the Māori culture, but celebrates it.
Their client, the Ministry of Justice, communicated a strong desire to create a place that would feel respectful of the cultural importance of the Court and have a welcoming feel to those who attend it.
The interior’s materials and finishes were central to this with the designers working with Studio Pasifika’s renowned craftsman, Carin Wilson on the woodwork and intricate carving.

“It’s a different kind of courtroom ... There’s this kind of formal procedural aspect that needs to be met. But there’s also got to be the sense of tradition. And there’s got to be the sense of oneness around them. ”
