Reaching New Heights

Reaching new heights, a classic Mt Albert villa went through an extensive renovation with dramatic results.

Taking her lead from the architect’s plans for a modern extension to the original villa’s back, Pip Maxwell reflects that her design of the interior had to acknowledge and compliment this amalgamation of old and new.

The extension focused around the family’s open plan living area, with a large kitchen (with scullery), laundry, dining and second living area opening out to the back yard and new pool.

The clients (a family with young children) brief to Pip was to create a feeling of warmth and comfort in the look and feel, while also utilising finishes that were more industrious and real. The result being a home that is ‘raw with a tailored edge’.

To achieve this, an array of materials was used, from high end leather, finished stone on the kitchen island, through to edge tape in the scullery / laundry imitating ply. The triple height stairwell wall features concrete panels with steel fixings and Bloom pendant lights by Resident, scattered at varying heights to be enjoyed by occupants on both levels.

It’s the little extra details that are often a designer’s favourite moment in a project. For Pip, this was the wrapping of the pale pink Heritage tiles on the Powder room’s wall onto the floor, as a boarder to the Carrara stone.

Pip’s favourite image from our shoot is the pendant lights against the stairwell wall. “The simplicity of the image with the raw concrete wall and tailored light fittings all complement each other beautifully.”
